Electronics: 3Com Corporation
The challenge was to design a valve gearing for a 1927 steam locomotive. More specifically, the goal was to create a detailed model that included items such as drive rods and Walschaert valve gearings. Our in-house CAD program, CADKEY, was wireframe and the solids were difficult to use. Pro/ENGINEER was extremely difficult to use and posed licensing problems.

Education: Art Center College of Design
The Art Center College of Design is on the cutting edge of industrial design. The product design curriculum at Art Center helps students think visually and creatively as they learn design fundamentals and hands-on techniques for bringing new products to market. In the past, advanced CAD design programs were too expensive and complex for the majority of industrial designers and students to use. Industrial designers were limited to using sketches and 2D drawings to convey their concepts to production engineers, sacrificing subtlety of form and ergonomics in the process.

Automotive & Transportation: AP Racing
For more than 30 years, AP Racing in the UK has been pushing the envelope, tweaking its high-performance clutch and brake system designs for race cars and motorcycles, sport cars, and specialty vehicles. In 1998, the company set out to re-shape its design process as customers increasingly demanded more clutch and brake performance in a shorter time frame. The previous design software required too much hands-on manipulation, which reduced the amount of troubleshooting and refinement engineers could perform. AP Racing engineers used several high-end CAD packages to design one of its products within a week to see which one would best attain its benchmarks for ease of use, speed, and functionality. Only SolidWorks 3D mechanical design software achieved the benchmarks.
